Successfully painting traditionally difficult-to-coat substrates used in a wide range of commercial and industrial applications is now much easier due to a Bayer MaterialScience LLC advance in waterborne primer coating raw material technology, the company reports. In addition, primers built on this new Bayer technology offer high-performance properties and low volatile organic compound (VOC) content. Bayer MaterialScience LLC developed the waterborne primer technology in response to market demand for coatings that not only comply with more stringent VOC regulations, but also provide the same high-performance properties as solventborne coatings as well as the versatility to coat different substrates. Peter Schmitt, field technical service manager, Coatings, Adhesives & Specialties, Bayer MaterialScience LLC, will share new research on waterborne coating formulations during a presentation “Super-sticky waterborne primer” at 8:50 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 26. Schmitt’s talk is part of the Coatings Trends and Technologies Conference, which is being held Sept. 26-27, in Chicago. “Recently, Bayer developed a high-performance, commercial waterborne coating that could be used as a primer on various substrates, such as aluminum, wood, vinyl, polyester and polyurethane materials, while giving manufacturers the opportunity to use one topcoat over all substrates,” Schmitt said. “The formulation is a good fit for applications in the building and construction, automotive and industrial coatings industries.” Schmitt will share additional insights into the polyurethane chemistry behind the waterborne coating advancements along with results from tests that measure chemical and abrasion resistance and other attributes. Attendees of the Coatings Trends and Technologies Conference can visit Bayer’s booth (#32) to learn more about waterborne coatings technology.
